The Carter family and Corriedales have an intertwined history going back over 80 years, but the recent progress of Flock 239 of the Australian Corriedale Association started in 2009.
Billigaboo Stud was given the opportunity to have the pick of the 2008 and 2009 Gundowringa stud (Flock 18) ewe hoggets. Then in 2009 and 2010 Bulgandra (Flock 1) offered us the same opportunity.
We purchased Gundowringa 'Rupert' 080002. It was the same blend as back in 1973.
The AIM was to create the GG line. Line bred, long bodied, large sheep with a bold, soft, lustrous 28 micron wool with bone and spring of rib. Sheep with constitution based on the Lincoln shape and size and the handle and lustre of wool going back to the unique Lara merino wools that created the Corbett Stud Flock. That became the original Australian Corriedale Flock.
STAGE 1
From 2010 to 2016 Showing at Sydney, Dubbo and Canberra resulting in 16 Champion ribbons in Ram and Ewe classes. A product of welding Flock 1 and Flock 18 into a type with a background of a century of breeding with emphasis on maternal input and pedigree. The GG line was created.
STAGE 2
Adding ewes from Wye and Yullundry of the same visual type to weld into a WY line using 'Rupert' and his sons.
Now the showing of ewes stopped. They had shown the public their type. Now it was time for them to concentrate in the paddock.
STAGE 3
2015 Moving to Narrandera to Billigaboo West on the Yanco Creek, home to so much sheep history. Not far from Bulgandra Station where Flock 1 lived all those years ago. A 16 inch rainfall. A complete change of environment. Changing from a July August lambing to an April May lambing due to seasonal patterns. The sheep have prospered in the new environment.
2017 saw the introduction of embryo transfer and AI to maximise the top ewes impact. Also to allow the introduction of the first outside ram since 2009 – Stanbury 'Jim'. He was related in the past supplying a new line.
The woollen throws created under the ETC label, made from our 28 micron wool, were in the market place. To demonstrate what traditional Corriedale wool could do. The AWI helped our program with great support. The throws are dotted all over the world.
2019 Sweetfield Jaffa was purchased to work in the WY line, being of a similar type. A very big long sheep with great outlook.
STAGE 4
2020 A new era without shows – due to Covid -19. Marketing by technology has come alive. The exciting purchase of ‘Big Boy’ semen (Bendigo Champion 2018) from Gambier View to use in an AI program, along with the Ballyvaughan Pastoral stud (Flock 2434). Ballyvaughan lives at Billigaboo West and joined us in the previous ET and AI program giving diversity of direction within the same genetic pool and generational inspiration in a very fast moving technological age.
The blending of the daughters and sons of over 24 Championship winners in the last 11 years makes 2020 a very exciting year. A year where the call everywhere is for dual purpose sheep – meat and wool.
OUR AIM
A self-replacing pure Corriedale flock with high fertility, lots of lustrous soft bulky 28 micron wool capable of turning off lambs to the trade within 22 weeks of birth – on pasture.
Purebred and most of all lots of constitution to survive and thrive.
And they have achieved the above in 2020.
